Ami Vitale has eight tips for documentary photography. To begin, she says you need to learn as much about your topic as possible. Next she says you should try to take photos to bring people together, not tear them apart. Thirdly she says you need to have empathy and try to put yourself in your subject's shoes and try to get to understand the emotions they have. Next she says not to fear and that you should not be afraid of the culture, people, etc. that you are photographing. Next she says you should be comfortable in the way you talk to people and not be afraid to talk to them. Then she says take your time and not rush your project. Next she says to be ethical towards your subject and fully disclose what you want to do. Finally Vitale says you should be sure to protect your work with things like copyright laws.
If I could go anywhere and document the life of another culture I would go to small towns in South America. I think it would be interesting to see how affected they are by modern technology and tell the story of these villages of South America. I would definitely research my subject for this project. I would try to put myself in my subject's shoes and understand their situation. Finally, I would respect my subjects to the fullest extent and explain to them clearly and in detail what I want to do. Michael Crouser takes pictures to capture moments. Jennifer Schlesinger takes pictures to show how humans interact with nature. They are similar because they both take pictures to create a feeling, and they both are meticulous in creating their images. They are different because Jennifer likes more old fashioned pictures, and they tend to focus on different subjects, with Crouser focusing on shapes. I like Michael Crouser more because I like the way his pictures invoke feeling. I like Jennifer Schlesinger too, but I think her pictures are less meaningful.
I will represent Kraft Edgers scissors. I'm going to take pictures of their decorative cut scissors. The target audience is schools and students. I would expect to see these in a school supply magazine. I am going to use natural lighting. I only need the scissors as props.
Elgin Park is a fictional town from the 1900s created Michael Paul Smith. Maggie Taylor is a photographer who uses old pictures to create unique images that aren't just normal pictures. They are similar because they both create their images and they both spend lots of time preparing a final product. They are different because Michael Paul Smith creates his images by hand and physically builds them and Maggie Taylor uses a computer to digitally edit her photos. Another reason they are different is because Michael Paul Smith spends most of his preparation time setting up what he will be shooting and Maggie Taylor spends more time editing the pictures after they're taken. I think I like the photos of Elgin Park better. I like them because they have a classic feel of stereotypical 1900s American town. I also like the story behind how they are created better than Maggie Taylor's.
Charlie Todd uses his work to bring people together by using random acts of happiness to brighten people's days. I found the Best Buy prank interesting and the mall dance. If I would plan a Charlie Todd style project I would have people wear black clothes and sunglasses with walkie talkies at a store and pretend to be security.
Vivian Maier was a secret street photographer who took amazing pictures, but never showed them to anyone until the pictures were found after her death. I found a few things interesting, I think it is interesting that she pretended to be French. I think it is interesting how many newspapers she collected throughout her lifetime. The final thing I find interesting, if not creepy, is how she treated the kids she watched after. Vivian Maier was considered a street photographer because she secretly took pictures of people in public. I wonder why her aunt specifically stated in her will that no family member of hers was to receive anything.
Garry Winogrand worked as a photographer throughout the mid-1900s in New York. He was known for his pictures of streets, people, rodeos, airports, and zoos. He has many pictures in museums. I like his work because it is very focused on candid photos. I like the way he was able to focus on one point but still have interesting things in the background. I can use his candids as an inspiration for mine.
I put the text in, added a layer and adjusted the opacity to make an image in text. The easiest part was adding the text. The hardest part was memorizing when to adjust what.
Shadows can be a subject in photography by filling an empty frame. Shadows of patterns create interesting by drawing in the eye and making a picture interesting. Light can be used to create a shadow by using a light and blocking it to form a shadow.
